The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."

Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry says farewell to a genuine innovator whose legacy on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
