Edwards along with Gary O'Neil are two of the initial names under consideration to succeed the former manager as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday following the squad's 10-match without a victory beginning to the top-flight campaign.
And both candidates - both of who have previous links to the team - are part of the names to be evaluated by the Wolves leadership.
The manager is presently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton Town head coach - who played over a century of games for the club during his playing career - is said to be a strong contender for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys support from the club directors as they start the search of hiring a new manager.
O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, even though he would be a shock choice considering he was released by the club in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham player is currently unemployed which means Wolves would not be required to pay any compensation.
