The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Shares He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... For Now.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the popular series coming to an end—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team opened up about the fan response and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Fan Response
Anyone might to get swayed by the rampant praise and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. He is doing his best to avoid both.
“It's like being constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by what people are saying.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Will Vince Gilligan See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” he states. “but we are always ready to abandon a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to fall back on.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
