Strong cold-season gusts caused walls to collapse onto flimsy shelters housing people displaced by conflict in Gaza, killing at least four people. This tragedy underscores the perilous living conditions that continue after over 24 months of devastating bombardment and critical shortages of aid.

Truce Provides Little Relief from Harsh Elements

Although a truce has been active from October, aid groups state that Palestinians do not have the adequate shelter necessary to survive frequent winter storms.

Medical staff at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the bodies, said on this week that the deceased include a pair of adult females, a young female, and a male adult.

In a separate incident, the local health authority announced on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant died of extreme cold during the night.

"The world has enabled us to witness loss of life in every possible way," stated Bassel Hamouda after the funeral. "While it is correct the shelling may have paused for now, but we have witnessed every conceivable cause of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Shelter Collapse

According to the medical center, three members of a single household — elderly a man, his 15-year-old relative, and his son's wife — were killed when an 26-foot high wall collapsed onto their tent in a area near the sea of the city. No fewer than 5 additional people were hurt in the event.

Family members on Tuesday began clearing the rubble that had entombed their loved ones and reconstructing the temporary homes for those who remained.

Aid Distribution and Continuing Emergency

James Elder, spokesperson for the UN children's fund, said on that day that at least 100 children below eighteen years old – sixty males and 40 females – had been lost their lives since the truce started because of military operations, including unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, air raids, tank shelling and employment of live ammunition. These numbers, he explained, reflected incidents where sufficient information had been compiled to warrant documentation, but the overall count is expected to be greater. He noted that hundreds of minors had been injured.

"While 'bombings and shootings have decreased' under the ceasefire, they have not stopped," Elder informed journalists at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video from Gaza City. "So what the international community now terms calm would be viewed as a catastrophe in any other place," he concluded.

Another Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s residents of more than 2 million people has been struggling to fend off the freezing temperatures and storms at bay while facing shortages of assistance and a absence of more substantial transitional shelter, which is urgently required during the winter months. This marks the third cold season since the war between the state and Hamas started on a date in late 2023, when militants stormed into southern Israel and murdered approximately twelve hundred individuals and abducted 251 more into Gaza.

The local health authority says over 71,400 Palestinians have been fatally injured in the subsequent military campaign.
